The village dates back to the early Middle Ages, while from the end of the 13th century a community of Friars Minor settled on the island. It was they who welcomed Saint Francis to the island for a whole Lent for a spiritual retreat, after his return from a trip to nearby Cortona. The place where the saint is believed to have landed and the small cave where he is said to have slept are still objects of veneration today and can be visited on the east coast.
