No monastery without a monastery garden. In the original abbey this was a cloister garden with square beds. At the beginning of the 19th century it was transformed into an English landscape park with visual axes. The staircase at the rear of the abbess quarters is the starting point for the central visual axis. From here the abbess looked out over the fields and forest beyond, which bears the pretty name 'Paradise'.

The English garden consists of an alternation of lawns and visual axes between more wooded areas. One of the most beautiful trees in the park today is a bald cypress right next to the Demer River, a coniferous tree that is now mainly found in North America, but is also often planted in parks in this country. Only in very rare cases does it form aerial roots like the one you see here.

The English Park is a unique green witness to a completely new view of the world and nature, which emerged between 1750 and 1850: all over Europe, lords of the manor, abbesses and princes exchanged their strict formal gardens for lush landscape parks, with special tree species, vistas and walking paths. Moreover, this park has remained almost untouched since then, a secret garden that is now being opened up to everyone.

The castle park extends to the east of the old and new abbey quarters. It is an elongated park in landscape style with monumental groups of trees, striking because of the colour shades and habit of the trees. The site goes back to the old parterre gardens and preserves relics that were already mentioned in 1744, was reworked into an English garden at the end of the 18th century, and was revised, including in terms of planting, in the 19th century and the 20th century. The location between the Demer and a parallel country road has remained unchanged since the measurements before 1812 (date of the cadastral collection plan) and the current situation can also be recognised on the maps of the Dépôt de la guerre and the ICM.
