The Morelli bench in the Bismarck forest

The Morelli bench is a stone bench enclosed in a large semicircle with artistic decoration in the Bismarck forest on the Steinberg.

The bench was designed by the Würzburg sculptor Peter Josef Loster and erected about 150 meters west of the Bismarck Tower in 1907 by the Würzburg Beautification Association in honor of the merchant Franz Morelli. He had bequeathed large sums of money to charitable causes. Among others, the Beautification Association, the Institute for the Blind and the Institute for the Deaf and Mute. Morelli had always enjoyed spending time on the Steinberg.

A centrally integrated plaque bears the following inscription: "In gratitude, the Beautification Association dedicates the bench and square to its benefactor Franz Morelli, 1907." The speech at the unveiling of the monument was given by district archivist Sebastian Göbl. He particularly highlighted Morelli's "spirit of genuine love of humanity and golden civic spirit".

The Würzburg coat of arms can be seen prominently on the left and the Franconian coat of arms on the right. In front of the bench there is a clearing that offers a view of the old town. Benches and children's swings have been set up on the lawn.

In 2012 the bench was renovated by the Beautification Association. The renovation was carried out by the Würzburg restorer and master church painter Dennis Apel. The shell limestone stone bench was restored to a state that invites people to linger again by reworking it, cleaning it with a steam jet, renewing the joint areas and aligning the steps. The four block steps and the two front stone parts were re-anchored and larger stone defects were repaired.

The Morelli bench was originally framed at the back by Japanese ornamental cherry trees, Franz Morelli's favorite tree. This made for a great picture, especially during the cherry blossom season. The last ornamental cherry tree had to be felled by the municipal gardening department in the mid-2010s, so that none of the trees exist today.
