Rabsztyn Castle, located on a hill near Olkusz, is a picturesque fortress from the times of Casimir the Great, partially rebuilt and open to the public. The castle tower offers a view of the surrounding hills and forests, and the route to the castle leads through the peaceful, hilly areas of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. There is a small museum and a café on site.

The Rabsztyn limestone hill is the perfect place to build a stronghold. This is probably what our ancestors thought, when in the mid-14th century they built a stronghold with a high round tower on the local rock. The medieval knight's castle, which was built in the times of Casimir the Great, changed owners many times. They were: Spytko of Melsztyn, the Toporczyk family called the Rabsztyńskis, later, among others, the Boners, until at the beginning of the 17th century it passed into the hands of Zygmunt Myszkowski. Before 1615, the lower castle was built here, attached to the rock on which the old fortress stood. The Baroque castle, a typical magnate residence, survived until 1657, when it was burned down by the Swedes. After the "Swedish Deluge", it was only partially rebuilt from the destruction. At the beginning of the 18th century, a starost's manor house and a farm were built at the foot of the castle, and the castle itself fell into greater and greater ruin. In the mid-19th century, the destruction was completed by the local population, who dismantled the castle walls to recover the building material, and in 1901, treasure hunters blew up the tall cylindrical tower.

The castle has survived in this condition to this day. However, for several years, security works have been carried out there, part of the walls and two bridges have been rebuilt, and the entrance gate has been reconstructed.

And what does the name Rabsztyn mean? It is from the German Rabstein, which gives us Krucza Skała when translated.

In the gate building, tourists can see a small exhibition devoted to the history of the castle, including a three-dimensional model of the castle, copies of engravings depicting the castle, replicas of medieval weapons and armaments, and stone architectural details found during archaeological work at the castle. A new feature is the tour of the partially reconstructed upper castle and tower, which has a viewing terrace and balcony, as well as a small prison. In the cleared basements of the 17th-century palace, a café, as well as ticket offices and toilets have been built. A stone amphitheater for outdoor events has been built in the courtyard. In a few years, the utility buildings of the middle castle will also be open to visitors - the former bathhouse and kitchen, and work is already underway here in the glass pavilion.
