The church on the hill gave Kirchberg its name. The Kirchberg church was also likely built in the 13th century. It was completely rebuilt in 1822/23, so that nothing remains of the medieval core of the building today.

The church possessed a late Gothic winged altarpiece by Peter Breuer (1521). It is presumably the last winged altarpiece by the Zwickau woodcarver. The shrine and wings of the altarpiece, however, are now—beautifully restored—in the Freiberg City and Mining Museum. Only the predella and two individual figures (Mary and John) from the altarpiece's superstructure (rearpiece) remain on site.
