Tradition has it that the Georgian King Vakhtang I Gorgasali killed a pheasant while hunting in a wooded valley. The animal fell into a hot spring and its injury was healed by the bubbling water. The king had the area carefully explored. When he found out that there were many hot springs there, he founded the city of Tbilisi in this place in the 2nd half of the 5th century.
The Abanotubani spa district is located in the southern part of the old town. The sulfur baths are hard to miss here, the cupolas of the baths sprout like small mushroom heads and invite you to relax.
