The construction of the cathedral was started by the Olomouc prince Svatopluk in 1104-1107. It was continued by his son Wenceslaus Henry, who, before his death in 1130, handed over the construction to the Olomouc bishop Jindřich Zdíkov. The still unfinished building was consecrated on June 30, 1131, and was completed only in 1141. In the same year it also became a cathedral, i.e. an episcopal church. The original three-nave Romanesque basilica, with a higher central nave, underwent numerous reconstructions over time. Only part of the perimeter walls, the buried crypt and the foundations of the facade towers have survived to this day. The original form of the basilica is depicted on the seal of Bishop Jindřich Zdík.
