    Chiesa del Gesu, Tropea
The Church of the Gesù in Tropea
From the original Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas to the Catholic Church of the Society of Jesus and finally the Redemptorists, a sacred art gallery of Tropian and Calabrian artists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
The Church of the Gesù dates from the early 1600s and was built by the Jesuit Fathers who arrived in Tropea in 1594. The building stands on the site of the ancient church "San Nicola della Cattolica" (VIII-IX centuries), Tropea Cathedral before the current Cathedral, but of Greek Orthodox rite. The church destroyed the remains of the old Byzantine church as we see it today, based on the design of the Church of the Gesù Nuovo in Naples (a Greek cross with a dome and barrel vaults on the coat of arms, but it was never completed). The facade is in baroque style in harmony with the interior. We have four pilasters in relief protruding from the face wall and supporting the tympanum, in the center of which is a window with the coat of arms of the Jesuit Fathers "I.H.S." opens: Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus Savior of the people). In the center of the pilasters we have four niches ending in conch shells with the statues of the most important Holy Physicians of the Western Church: St. Augustine, St. Gregory the Great, St. Ambrose and St. Jerome. The entrance consists of a massive box door decorated with crosses and bronze rosettes. Above the main altar is the canvas of the "Circumcision of Jesus" attributed to Giuseppe Schifino (1580-1640). Virtues and biblical scenes by the Tropian painter Giuseppe Gaetano Grimaldi (1690-1748) are depicted on the pendentives, on the lunettes under the dome and on the back walls. Always by the same author, we have the large canvas of "The Nativity" that can be admired above the front door. The work is dated 1731 and occupies 38 square meters; shows in the center the Madonna and Child and around scenes of rural and pastoral life. On the left we have Grimaldi's self-portrait, alluding to the Nativity. Entering the church we find on the left the bust of Carlo Scattaretica with the inscription in which his donation of 600 ducats in 1676 for the reconstruction of the church and chapel of Sant'Alfonso Maria dei Liguori (1696-1787), founder of the Congregation of Redemptorist Missionaries. The eighteenth-century altar, inlaid with marble, was bought in Messina by Fr. Vito Michele Di Netta and dedicated to the saint founder of the Redemptorists on the occasion of his canonization in 1839.
