Silk Museum Castello Caracciolo, San Floro

    The Silk Museum

The San Floro Silk Museum is located within the castle walls of Castello Caracciolo overlooking the Corace Valley. The stones of the building, believed to date from the 1400s, jealously preserve the relics of Calabrian history and have as protagonists the city of Catanzaro, considered European silk capital between the 1300s and 1700s.

The first part of the museum preserves the historical costumes, damasks from Catanzaro, as well as sacred damask clothing and industrial archaeological textiles. Another area of the museum displays contemporary raw silk crafts, separated for crochet and handkerchiefs, made on a 4-shaft loom.

The third part of the museum is dedicated to mulberry trees, silkworms and natural fibers. There is also a section dedicated to natural dyes, with a rich selection of silk samples dyed with poppies, red Tropea bulbs, grub roots, field flowers, St. John's wort and walnut shells.

Recently, the section on silk worldwide has been completed, with an exhibition of fabrics and traditional costumes from countries closely linked to silk culture, such as France, Thailand, India.

In the last part of the museum it is possible to see up close looms, old or not, on which the boys of the Cooperativa Nido di Seta (Silk Nest Cooperative) were still weaving the precious handicrafts. A wonderful weave of past, present and future.

The Silk Museum of San Floro

The San Floro Silk Museum is located within the walls of the Caracciolo Castle, which dominates the Corace Valley. The stones of this construction, believed to date back to 1400, jealously guard the relics of Calabrian Sericola history, the protagonist of which is the city of Catanzaro, considered the European capital of silk between 1300 and 1700. Historical costumes, Catanzaro damasks, sacred damask robes and textile industrial archeology are preserved in the first section. In another, it displays contemporary raw silk artifacts differentiated by crochet and fabrics from the ancient 4-licci loom.

A third section is dedicated to mulberry, silkworm and natural fibers. An area is then reserved for natural dyes, with a rich assortment of colored silk samples with poppies, Tropea bulbs, Robbia roots, field daisies, St. John's wort, walnut shells, etc. Recently, the section on silk in the world has become more traditional with the exhibition Furnished with fabrics and costumes from countries closely linked to silk culture, such as France, Thailand, India. In the last section you can see up close the looms, old and not, on which the boys of the Nido di Seta cooperative weave the precious artifacts. A wonderful interweaving of past, present and future.
