Fontana Carlo Pacino / The Devil's Fountain

Many of Girifalco's secrets have legendary roots. The refined baroque fountain in the middle of the historic center is one of the most fascinating traces of the place. Also known as the Carlo Pacino fountain, it was built in the 17th century next to the church dedicated to Saint Rocco, the city's patron saint.

From the beginning a widespread belief that later became a myth, a legend, accompanied this monument, which seemed to have its back on the church only a few steps away. According to the collective imagination, this great fountain was indeed built by the devil in a single night to show a tremendous display of power and creativity, as if to squeeze between humans and the Most High.

Numerous elements ultimately led to the confirmation of this hypothesis: the shape of a goat's foot, which was very different from the other imperfections on the surface of the sandstone of which the monument is made; the three steps on all sides of the perfectly octagonal structure; the acacia twigs, perfect and mesmerizing twists; the symbolic masks. The fountain was the work of skillful and jealous master masons who were able to build their wonderful works in a short time. It was the speed with which the well was being built that suggested the idea of a demonic work.

Legends aside, remains the beauty of a remarkable monument that has been admired for hundreds of years in the heart of Girifalco.
