The Basilica, as written on a plaque placed next to the column, was destroyed in 1561, in favor of the construction of the new Venetian walls and the neighboring Porta Sant’Alessandro.

On April 28, 1621, Bishop Giovanni Emo inaugurated the laying of the column located where the Basilica of Sant'Alessandro was located.
In 1961 a scientific research ascertained that the material of the column was not Sarnico stone as erroneously believed until then, but Numidian granite, a material used in Roman times.
From this important discovery it was understood that the church was built over an ancient Roman temple, reusing some parts.
