If you want to access the Upper Town of Bergamo on foot, quickly and without using the ladders, the Via Roccolino route is the ideal solution.

Going up from Via Maironi da Ponte in Valverde, you can easily access Via Roccolino which connects, with a direct line, to Via Beltrami in Colle Aperto along a "historical" path of about 710 meters and a difference in height of 100 meters.

Between 1800 and 1900 Via del Roccolino was very popular with the inhabitants of the Castagneta area, who had to first descend to the bottom of the valley in Valverde to go to the Upper Town bypassing the Venetian Walls, and then go up again from Porta San Lorenzo.

Subsequently, to eliminate the obstacle of the western bulwark of S. Pietro, in the ring of the walls, an opening was created by breaking down part of the walls, along the current Via Beltrami at the point where the schools stand today.

Unknown is the criterion on the basis of which the Municipal Administration decided to demolish a large portion of the walls to facilitate the connection of the inhabitants of Castagneta to the Upper Town.
Perhaps a small arch or passageway could have been created without demolishing a historical section of the Venetian walls.

From an elaborate by the "Amici delle Mura" we read:
"Not only the side of the bulwark was landed, but the embankment behind it was also removed up to the powder magazine and the damage appears so serious because the side of the bulwark was equipped with a unique singularity like three gunboats side by side"
