Part of the Park of Gardens and one of the themed areas

Japanese gardens are an expression of Japanese philosophy and history. Such gardens can be found on private property, in city parks, at Buddhist temples or Shinto shrines, as well as at historical sites such as old castles.

A special form to which many of the most famous Japanese gardens belong is the Zen garden in the Kare-san-sui style, which does not use water or large plants at all. These rock gardens have also become popular as miniatures in the form of a box about thirty centimeters wide for the desk. The Tsukiyama style (artificial hills), on the other hand, depicts mountains of stones and small hills, and a pond represents the sea. It is therefore practically a miniature landscape.

The Japanese garden, which was created in 2000, is being opened up and expanded into the rear area, which was previously only planted with a border. A striking 20-square-meter pavilion with a thatched roof will in future allow visitors to linger in the rain and view the garden from a new and elevated perspective. A curved path made of natural stone, typical of Japanese gardens, leads to it and, in the future, also through the garden. The garden thus changes its character as a pure observation garden. Soil modeling creates additional tension. A few but impressive topiary plants from the stocks of the former Höpken tree nursery structure the garden.

With the second construction phase, the Japanese garden will finally change from the formerly pure observation garden into a walking garden at the start of the 2021 season. The natural stone path - which has led to the pavilion since the redesign - will in future lead through the garden over the dry stream to the main path and invites you to take a short walk in and through the Japanese garden. Visitors are now able to experience the garden from different angles.

A Japanese-designed garden is characterized by clear, clear lines and radiates peace, security and beauty. The few designed elements have great expressiveness that captivates the viewer in every season. By intensively caring for the plants, such a garden can be preserved for a long time even in our climate zone. (Source: park-der-gaerten.de/backup/nds/gaerten/mustergaerten/10-japan-garten)
