Perfect bird watching can be done from this tower. In the years 1999-2001, the Old Elbe was desludged as part of the EU-Life project "Renaturalisation of the river, backwater and floodplain forest", whereby the southwestern stretch of water could only be desludged to a small extent.

The desludging will secure habitats for fire-bellied toads and tree frogs as well as for the more than 140 species of breeding birds that have so far been recorded in the Kliekener Aue area. Among them are such rare species as kingfishers, sedge warblers and cranes.
