Basilica Cattedrale di Reggio Calabria Maria SS Assunta, Reggio Calabria
    Reggio Calabria Cathedral
The first church was built around 300 AD on the ruins of a Greek temple to Apollo. It has been expanded and remodeled over the centuries. Completely destroyed by the Messina earthquake in 1908, the cathedral was rebuilt in neo-Romanesque style.
The main facade is divided by four towers. The statues of St. Paul and St. Stephen are on the left and right of the portal on the outside staircase. The church building was completed in 1928, the 28 m high campanile in 1931.

The Cathedral, designed by Father Carmelo Angiolini, dominates the large square in front of it and is flanked by the imposing statues of Saint Paul on the left and Saint Stephen of Nicaea on the right. It is built in neo-Romanesque style, with some variations that make it unique in Italy.

The cathedral was rebuilt several times after looting, fires or destruction due to seismic events. There is uncertain information about the cathedral for the period between the 4th and 14th centuries. Around the middle of the 11th century it was destroyed by the Saracens, then rebuilt by the Normans and ravaged again by the Turks in 1574. At the end of the 17th century, the reconstruction began by Archbishop Mons. Creales and completed by Archbishop Martino Ybanez y Villanueva. In recent times, the two devastating earthquakes of 1783 and 1908 have greatly affected its fate and have required the building to be rebuilt twice.
