In 1517, today's castle is mentioned as a court seat with a wooden manor house. In the 17th century it belonged to the Imperial Counts of Hörwarth, Augsburg patricians, who bought it in 1611. The existing castle was built in 1696 by the master mason Caspar Feichtmayr the Elder. Ä. from Bernried as a three-storey building with a gabled roof for Ferdinand Joseph von Hörwarth. In 1881 it was expanded to four floors, got a hipped roof, a belvedere on the roof, a portico and a low wing. The facade was designed in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The functional interior does not correspond to the elaborate exterior. There is a landscape park around the castle.

The castle remained in the possession of the von Hörwarth family until 1800, then came to the Rambaldi family and in 1880 to the chemical entrepreneur Christoph Heinrich Boehringer, but through the marriage of his daughter it returned to the Rambaldi family and after their male line died out to the Nagel zu Aichberg family, who owned it had to give up during the National Socialist period. Since 1948 the castle has belonged to the Free State of Bavaria, which has leased it together with the neo-Romanesque Seeburg Castle to the south to the Christian youth organization Wort des Lebens e.V., which uses it as a youth leisure center.

The castle is protected as a monument (No. D-1-88-113-18).
