The town hall is located at the southern end of the market square. The oldest part of the building was built in 1408. Then, as now, a wooden staircase leads to the entrance. The staircase could be quickly dismantled in the event of danger, so that the enemy could no longer gain access. Between 1601 and 1605, the people of Meppen added another floor to their town hall and embellished it with a Renaissance gable.
