Coal mining began here in 1910, and the associated settlement was located directly adjacent to the mine. Mining operations ceased in 1921, and the buildings were demolished and fell into disrepair.
The town is named after the far more successful mining town of the same name in Virginia.
Today, scattered remains and foundation walls can be found here.
The lower, level area is almost park-like, with paved paths and benches through heathland and sparse forest. A pleasant trail winds its way up the slope, offering a few views of the surrounding mountains and the Athabasca River.
