Arehucas Rum Distillery

The Arehucas rum distillery is the largest in the Canary Islands.

The distillery was founded on August 9, 1884 under the name La Fábrica de San Pedro by Don Alfonso Gourié Álvarez and began producing the first sugar crop on February 23, 1885. From the beginning, the production enjoyed great popularity and received countless awards for its quality, and in 1892 it was awarded the title of "Official Supplier of the Royal Family" by Queen Regent Maria Christina of Austria.But it was not until 1940 that the famous rum, Ron Arehucas, began to become popular. After a 15-year break, the factory resumed its activities under the direction of Mr. Alfredo Martín Reyes.In 1965 it was renamed Destilería Arehucas due to a Spanish law.For €7 per person you can book a guided tour, the tour is available in several languages. You learn a lot about the history of the factory and Canarian rum.The price includes a tasting of 4 types of rum; if there are two of you, you can try 8 types of rum.After the tour, you can of course also buy the rum in the adjacent shop.

Since a lot of sugar cane was grown on Gran Canaria in the past, there was also a considerable amount of rum production. The most famous factory that still produces rum on Gran Canaria today and which you can visit on a day trip is the “Destilerias Ron Arehucas” in Arucas.
