The Rotbach isn't actually red at all, but rather a clear, lively stream almost 22 km long all the way to its confluence with the Rhine! Older maps also refer to it as Munne, Münne, Minne, "die Bach," "die Beeck," "die Becke," or "der rothe Bache."

However, it was first called "de roje Beek" as early as 1486. Later, it was also sometimes called "churfürstlicher Möhlenbach" or simply Mühlenbach.
