Each "Calvary", as here in Aigen-Schlägel, is reminiscent of "Golgotha" ("skull height") near Jerusalem, the place of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. A Way of the Cross often leads up the mountain or hill with the - nowadays mostly 14 - stations, early medieval precursors had only 7 stations and were sometimes also referred to as "Gang to the Seven Footfalls".
In some areas, after the fourteenth station, the burial of Jesus, there is another station: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. These Ways of the Cross broaden the view of the Easter hope perspective of overcoming death and suffering.

Hiking

A really impressive Stations of the Cross was erected here, which unfortunately is not often walked anymore. In many hairpin bends you go from station to station and is thus led up to Calvary. Very meditative!!
