Hiking

The official starting point for the Levada do Rei (marked PR18) is at the water treatment plant ("ETAR") in Quebradas, near the town of São Jorge on Madeira's north coast. From there, a short section with concrete steps leads up to the levada loop, which winds through the lush laurel forest to the endpoint at Ribeiro Bonito. Information boards and signs are located at the starting point; parking is limited, and an early start is recommended.
