The church was mostly built in the 14th century and replaced an older building, of which the westwork and crypt remain. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the church received its current baroque furnishings.

Beautiful church building in the middle of Thorn.

The history of Thorn is closely related to that of the abbey, which was founded around 975 by Saint Ansfried, Bishop of Utrecht, as a noble Benedictine monastery. The monastery in Thorn grew into a secular institution, and later became the center of the small principality of Thorn. The church was largely built in the 14th century and replaced an older structure, of which the westwork and crypt are still preserved. In the 17th and 18th centuries the church received its current Baroque interior.
After the closure of the monastery in 1797, the old parish church was demolished and the parish started using the adjacent monastery church. The famous architect Pierre Cuypers restored the church at the end of the 19th century. Cuypers had the eastern chapels demolished and the tower raised.
In March 2020, after breaking a hole in a display case in the treasury, burglars took several precious liturgical objects, including three chalices, a monstrance and a crucifix. More than a month later, two men were arrested and charged in connection with the crime. Part of the loot was recovered.
