The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin and Martyr Agatha, the patron saint of the city of Catania, and is located in the city center on the southeast side of the Piazza del Duomo. Various styles can be found in the cathedral: from the Norman period to the Baroque and Neoclassicism. In its original form it was an example of an "ecclesia munita", a "fortress church".
