In 1507, the castle was besieged in vain for two months by Brabant and Holland, who made a second successful attempt in 1508, after which the castle was dismantled by the besiegers. In 1518 the Gelderland general Maarten van Rossum had the castle restored, but it was set on fire by Brabant horsemen. Van Rossum had the castle restored, but it did not survive the 'disaster year' of 1672: it was demolished as a precaution to prevent French troops from settling there. (Another source claims that French soldiers destroyed it.

The oldest mention dates from 870 when Boudewijn II, Lord of Heusden, built a stronghold on this site around this time. This lordship built the castles Brakel and Aalst at the same time. The castle was strategically located between Brabant, Holland and Gelderland. Around 1490, the castle had the reputation of being a robbers hotbed. Under the leadership of Hendrik Ense, the castle was used as a base for raids in Brabant and Holland. In 1493, Karel van Gelre ordered Gerard van Weerdenburg to conquer the castle, after which the latter robbed the castle empty. Duke Charles had to intervene again after the Burgundians took over the village and castle in 1505.
