Brouwerij Cornelissen (formerly Brouwerij Sint-Jozef) in Opitter is a family business. The exact date of foundation is not known, but the Vissers family, founders of the brewery, can be traced back to the early 19th century. The brewery was founded under the name Sint-Jozef brewery. This mainly concerned Johannes Vissers, who was also mayor of Opitter, who lived in a mansion that also had stables and a brewery attached to it. His daughter Maria Sophia Carolina married a certain Joseph Cornelissen, and the couple had three sons: Jozef, Jaak and Leo. Jozef started a lemonade factory, Leo a bottling plant and Jaak was a brewer. In 1934-1935 he built a new brewery, and since 1937 Ops-Ale and Pax Pils have been brewed there. At the end of the 1940s, Jaak took over the bottling plant and the lemonade factory from his brothers. Later the company came into the hands of Jaak's sons Jan and Leo and in 1980 Jef Cornelissen took over as owner of the business. He greatly expanded the brewery. The current manager, Jef Jr. Cornelissen, fifth generation, joined the company full-time in 2004. He took over from his father in 2013. In 2015 it was decided to change the name of the brewery to "Cornelissen Brewery", which brought the family character more to the fore.
