Originally, a completely moated farm stood on the site of the castle. In 1899, this farm was sold to the unmarried Brussels lawyer De Greve, who also bought a number of plots of land, creating a 7 hectare park. In 1900 he had the castle built, where he moved in with his sister. De Greve was also the founder of the monastery in Opitter. When both residents died, the castle was purchased by notary Van Schoenbeek. His daughter, married to the future senator Edouard Janssens, moved into the castle. Eduard died in 1943 from carbon monoxide poisoning. Mrs. Janssens died in 1970, after which the heirs wanted to sell the castle. The municipality of Opitter bought the castle and park in 1972. In 1977, Opitter merged with Bree, which put the plans of the municipality of Opitter on hold and the castle fell into neglect. Attempts have been made to save the castle, for which purpose the association The Friends of the Castle and Park in Opitter was founded. To no avail: The castle was not classified as a monument. It was demolished and a community center was built in its place. However, the park remains intact and accessible to the public. It is a garden in English landscape style with various exotic trees. Today the park serves nature and recreation. (Source: Wikipedia)
