A first citadel was build on Kastellholmen in 1660, shortly after Skeppholmen and Kastellholmen became a naval base. The citadel was of great importance as all ships had to pass by in order to reach Stockholm. The citadel was rebuild twice and was a key part of the city defense. For instance, during the second world war it was equipped with rapid anti-aircraft guns.
