The Trapa nature reserve is a farm located at the southwestern end of the Tramuntana mountain range. Its name comes from the presence of a Trappist monastery, founded in 1810 by a community of Trappist monks fleeing the French Revolution. Canon Pere Roig gave them a property in the San José valley, in s'Arracó. Since then this area has been known as La Trapa.

In 1993 the Balearic environmental group GOB (Grup Balear d'Ornitologia I Defensa de la Naturalesa) acquired the Trapa estate, and has been in charge of its preservation ever since.

The farm has 81 hectares and has important biodiversity, with numerous endemic plants and the presence of emblematic birds. The Mediterranean orchids, wild olive trees, palm hearts, and also the osprey, the Eleanor falcon and the black vulture stand out.

The NSG is a place of extremely high biodiversity, in which some species stand out because of their uniqueness. For example, 16 endemic plant species and 14 Mediterranean orchid species were found. Bird species such as cormorants, shearwaters, ospreys, hawks and vultures can be seen on La Trapa. Of particular note is the Balearic Shearwater, a species endemic to the Balearic Islands.

Founded over 200 years ago by Trappist monks, the Reserva Natural de la Trapa has been a protected natural paradise on Mallorca since 1984. The 1,700 hectare area is home to breathtaking scenery. If you hike through the area on the GR221 long-distance hiking trail, with a bit of luck you can also see endemic animal species such as the rare black vulture.
