Architect A. De Bondt, whose design was awarded in the public competition of 1921, conceived the monument as a representative and impressive memorial with a contemporary design characterized by clean geometric lines and stylized ornamentation in the line of Art Deco. Concrete stone and white natural stone were used as construction material.
