The area around Vaals was inhabited long before our era and also in the Roman era, but the place got its present form through the activities of one man: Johann Arnold von Clermont (1728-1795). The son of an Aachen cloth maker moved the production of his family business to the neighboring town in 1761 after the laws of the imperial city's guild system had prevented an expansion of manufacture. At that time, Protestants were gladly accepted in Vaals, and several of Clermont's fellow believers from Aachen also moved to the Dutch part of the Duchy of Limburg, as they saw themselves exposed to disadvantages in Catholic Aachen.
