Not far from the Lauseiche, the old Limes line ran largely in a straight line through the Odenwald until it reached the Main near Woerth. The louse oak should actually be called "Lauscheiche" because it was used by the ancient Teutons to peer high in the crown of these trees into the hostile Roman territory. Of course, today's lukewarm oak no longer dates from Roman-Germanic times. Rather, it only reminds of the times when old and mighty oaks near the Limes were used by our ancestors for eavesdropping and spying.

1. Pilgrims who came on their pilgrimage to Engelberg Monastery after the steep climb from the Ohrnbachtal sang their "Te deum laudamus" (Great God, we praise you) here, whereby "laudamus" was shortened to "laus".
2. There used to be a listening or observation post at this point (the Bavaria/Hesse border is nearby). “Lauscheiche” became “Lauseiche”.
3. According to another version, "traveling people" (peddlers, beggars, day laborers, unemployed people, crooks...) on their journey to Miltenberg got rid of lice and other vermin at this point as a precautionary measure.
