Odeon or Odeion (Greek: ᾠδεῖον) was the name for a covered theater in ancient times. It was used for performances, competitions or council meetings.

The Odeon of Kos has the typical semi-circular floor plan and was built in the 2nd century BC. erected. Although the Odeon appears relatively small, up to 750 people can be seated here, which underlines the importance of the island of Kos during this time.

The Odeon had fourteen tiers of light marble seating in two sections. The nine rows of seats in the lower section have been restored true to the original. They were used by the high-ranking citizens in ancient times, while the upper rows of seats are made of granite and were intended for the general public.

Below the rows of seats were two semi-circular porticos and a series of rooms used as shops or workrooms. Access to these rooms is now closed, but you can see the dark corridors through the wide bars.

The stage building, which has an irregular, pentagonal floor plan, is less well preserved. However, the three passages between the front stage area (proscenium) and the rear area are clearly visible.

The Odeon was discovered by the Italian archaeologist Laurenzi in 1929, along with the Gymnasium and Roman Baths located to the east and west of the Casa Romana.

Location: The Odeon is on Leoforos E. Grigoriou V, opposite the western excavations. From the street, an avenue of cypresses leads to its entrance.

    Opening times: Wed – Mon 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Free entry.
