In front of the entrance to the council library there is a memorial to the German musician, composer and court conductor (1747 in Lüneburg - 1800 in Schwedt). He went to school in Lüneburg in the Johanneum. He penned the music for the Christmas carol "Your little children, come" and for the musical version of Matthias Claudius' "Abendlied". The glockenspiel, made of Meißner porcelain, from the Lüneburg town hall also plays a melody by him: "The moon has risen".

Johann Abraham Peter Schulz was born in Lüneburg in 1747 and first attended the monastery school in St. Michaelis, and later the Johanneum. He worked as a conductor in various cities, including Berlin and as the Royal Danish Court Kapellmeister in Copenhagen.

He was also very successful as a composer, always emphasizing the "popularity" of his melodies. Folk songs such as: "The moon has risen" and "Your little children are coming" are among the best known, but so are church hymns such as "We plow and we scatter" and others. He also created several operas, e.g. "The Barber of Seville" and some piano works.

He set popular poems of his time to music and published several songbooks "Lieder im Volkston".

After suffering from tuberculosis for several years, he died in Schwedt in 1800.

The beautiful glockenspiel made of Meissen porcelain in the Lüneburg town hall tower plays some of the musician's melodies. A monument and a commemorative plaque were placed in front of the old Lüneburg council library.

Johann Abraham Peter Schulz (March 31, 1747 in Lüneburg – June 10, 1800 in Schwedt) was a German musician and composer.

Today he is remembered in particular as the composer of the melody to Matthias Claudius' poem "Abendlied" ("The moon has risen") and the Christmas carol "Your little children, come".

(“Every year again” is not composed by Schulz, but by Friedrich Silcher, even if it can sometimes be read that way.)

Certainly, however, the setting of Matthias Claudius' text Serenata im Walde came from Johann Abraham Peter Schulz:

"If only there were bare ground where the trees are now, on my honor, sir, that wouldn't be half as nice."

Another hymn that Schulz is still known for is "We Plow and We Scatter".
