The Pasaje de Álvarez or Pasaje de Chinitas, takes its name from Antonio Álvarez, a businessman and former civil and military governor of Malaga, who ordered it to be built on the site of the collapsed monastery of the Agustinas. Of the old monastery, founded in 1628, only the marble portal has been preserved.

Right in front of the location of the national flag is one of Malaga's great unknowns. Despite its nearby location, the Plaza's architectural density and the mall's dynamism might make most people ignore the presence of the mast and national insignia, but their presence is not whimsy, but rather a representation of the state at the center of the city, the Point from which the city itself extends.

The name of the Álvarez Passage or Chinitas Passage is due to Antonio María Álvarez, a former businessman and civil and military governor of Málaga, who commissioned the construction of this passage on the former site of the Augustinian Convent.
