Roque Nublo is the remains of a once much higher stratovolcano. The formation of this volcano began about 4.2 to 4.6 mya with thick mafic lava flows that overlaid the eroded remains of an earlier Miocene volcano and extended up to 20 km to the coast. The eruptions continued for about 1.5 million years, with the rock produced progressively changing to trachyte and phonolite about 3.9 mya. The now more explosive eruptions in the summit area produced breccia-like ignimbrite deposits until the eruptions ended about 3 mya due to the intrusion of phonolithic vent plugs. The total volume of the volcano complex is estimated at 200 km³, the height of the volcano was at least 2500 m, but possibly well over 3000 m. Since then the volcano has been subject to severe erosion. Rock deposits from huge landslides can be found up to 25 km away. The summit rock of Roque Nublo, a former plug of a volcanic vent, was subject to erosion to a lesser extent than the softer surrounding rock due to its harder basalt breccia and was thus preserved as a hardened rock.

Roque Nublo was important as a sacred mountain in Canario times. They had built a cult site here where sacrifices were made to the sun god. The rock still has great significance today in folk songs such as Sombra del Nublo (Shadow of the Cloud Rock).
