Bernardo Bellotto, known as Canaletto (* 20 May 1722, according to other sources 30 January 1721 in Venice; † 17 October 1780 in Warsaw) was a Venetian painter. He is known for his realistic vedutas of European cities, in addition to Italian cities, especially Dresden, Vienna and Warsaw.
Dresden, where the 25-year-old painter settled in 1747, was not only the capital of the Electorate of Saxony at the time, but also the residence of the Polish king (as August III) in the person of Elector Friedrich August II. The elector and king was an exceptional art connoisseur who had a particular preference for contemporary Venetian painting and was significantly supported by his first minister, Count Heinrich von Brühl. Probably mediated by the diplomat and art connoisseur Francesco Algarotti, Bellotto was appointed court painter with an annual salary of 1750 thalers.
