      To arise:

The airfield was one of six reserve airfields that were built in Belgium at the request of NATO from 1952, and SHAPE (NATO's central command center) determined the criteria that these installations had to meet. The other alternative airfields were Bertrix-Jehonville, Ursel, Saint-Hubert, Weelde and Zutendaal. The first expropriations for the construction of the airfield were carried out in 1952. The actual construction started in 1955.

      Infrastructure:

The airbase occupies an area of more than 200 hectares. It is located entirely within the municipal boundaries of Malle. The airport has one runway, consisting of concrete slabs, which was constructed in the 05/23 direction. This track is 2990 m long and 45 m wide. The height is 16 meters. Of the total runway length, 799 m can be used. This area is indicated by markings. The parallel taxiway, also constructed from concrete slabs, is 2,430 m long and 22 m wide. This road could also be used as a reserve runway in emergencies. There are also aircraft hangars, air raid shelters, fuel depots and ammunition storage facilities on the site.

      Usage:

The airport is used during the weekends by two civilian flying clubs. During weekdays, the base is at the disposal of the Ministry of Defense.
