The Warandeplas is an extensive body of water that lies between the forests of Rollekensbergen and the Visbeek valley, an extremely valuable and extremely varied nature reserve. It is a beautiful location for walking, cycling and enjoying nature. There is even a zone where your dog can freely enter the water. In 2016 a sheep grid was placed around the Warandeplas in function of the grazing by sheep. In this way variation is ensured in the structure of the landscape with a mosaic of forest, shrubs and open areas.

The Warandeplas was created as a sand extraction pit for the construction of the E34 and the ring road around Turnhout. Waterfowl rest here, especially during bird migration and the winter months. Water bat, sand martin, sandpiper and viviparous lizard can be seen regularly. On the banks, sheep help restore the valuable flora. For dogs there is a zone where they are allowed in the water. Water skiing is possible on the lake itself. Swimming is prohibited.

Would you like to cool down? Swimming is prohibited in the lake, but you can water-ski. If you'd rather enjoy the silence, then go ahead - during the bird migration and in the cooler months, you could watch waterfowl such as sand martins and sandpipers.
