The Danish Gate with the Court of Denmark behind it, later the deanery, reminds us of King Christian II of Denmark, brother-in-law of Emperor Charles. In 1524 he came to Lier as an exile and stayed there until 1530. He got on well with the inhabitants of Lieren and was known here as the red king. Because of his part in the Stockholm massacre, he is remembered in Sweden as Christian the Tiran.

In 1513 Christian II (1481-1559) becomes king of Denmark and Norway. Sweden is added in 1520. In the Stockholm Massacre he has the rebellious Swedish nobility slaughtered. The people revolt and in 1523 he flees to his brother-in-law, the Habsburg Emperor Charles V.

In the end, Christian II is assigned a residence in Lier, where he arrives at the Court of Denmark in 1525. He gets on well with the Lierenaars and is known as the 'Red King' after his cloak of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

His wife Isabella died in 1526. Fearing that Christiaan would raise his children in a Protestant way, the governor-general Margaretha takes them away from him.

In 1531 Christiaan left Lier to retake his throne, but his rival Frederick I imprisoned him. He died 27 years later at Kalundborg Castle. ( source: visitLier)
