First mentioned in documents in 1237, the town looks back on an eventful history. Winegrowing, wine trade, shipping, fishing, wood and stone industries were the most important growth drivers, along with trade and crafts. The favorable location on the old Nuremberg-Frankfurt trade route and the staple right gave Miltenberg an early economic boom. In the early 19th century, however, the town lost its central location in the Electorate of Mainz and from then on lay on the edge of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The major phases of urban development were over and the medieval townscape has been preserved to this day. Today, the viewer recognizes Miltenberg's former importance in the magnificent half-timbered buildings, such as the Old Market Square - better known as the "Schnatterloch" - or the "Gasthaus zum Riesen", the oldest prince's inn in Germany. The Schwarzviertel, the oldest part of the town, nestles tightly between the Main and Greinberg. A perfect backdrop for scary stories and legends that you can listen to on a city tour. The city's two museums are definitely worth a visit: the Museum.Stadt.Miltenberg, which was awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize in 1999, and the Museum.Burg.Miltenberg, which was awarded the Lower Franconia District Cultural Foundation's Prize in 2012.
