Sculpture in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Zeeland ring riders association.
October 24, 2022
If you're talking about Zeeland folklore, you're talking about ring riding. On a galloping bareback horse, a ring rider must attempt to strike a ring with a lance. In addition, the ring gets smaller every new round until of course only one winner remains. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Zeeland Ring Riders Association, the statue 'The Ring Rider' has been placed between the trees on the square at the Koorkerkstraat. Created by Gerard Brouwer. The statue consists of a ring rider in competition clothing on a Zeeland horse. Want to see real ring drivers in action? Competitions are held annually in Middelburg and surrounding villages.

Statue of a ring rider on horseback, on a square pedestal.
A ring rider sits on an unsaddled horse, which he gallops through the ring track. He has a lance in his hand, with which he tries to stab the ring that hangs halfway down the track in an iron bush. The horse must be decorated and the competitor must wear the prescribed competition clothing. The Zeeland Ring Riders Association (ZRV) is the umbrella organization in Walcheren and Zuid-Beveland for ring and sled riding.
