Schauenburg Castle was built in the 11th century by Duke Berthold II of Zähringen and stands 397 meters above sea level on a massive granite outcrop at the entrance to the Rench Valley, opposite Strasbourg in the Rhine Valley. The castle was expanded in 1200 and is considered one of the most beautiful castle complexes of the 13th century. Its ingenious design combines a high and low castle, meaning it has a defensive wall to the east and a moat to the west.
