The fortified church of St. Johannis in Burgbernheim dates back to the 15th century and was built at a time when it was common to design churches not only as religious but also as military protective structures. The church served the citizens of Burgbernheim as a place of refuge in times of war and danger. Its robust construction and the integration of defensive elements reflect the need to defend against attacks.

    St. Johannis Church Burgbernheim
According to tradition, a destroyed church was rebuilt in Romanesque style by Bishop Einhard in 1102.
In 1876 the nave of the church was built over the Romanesque portal from 1102. The walls of the choir in the eastern part date from 1443.

Parts of the church tower are from the 14th century.
The tower has five floors, a tower clock and a belfry.
