The Schwanheimer meadow is the largest Frankfurt forest meadow. Once here, the "Urmain" rolled over and deposited the clay on which the Schwanheimer forest originated.
If Schwanheim was in financial difficulties in former times due to war or high taxes, a piece of the forest was cleared and the wood was sold. This created open spaces that were leased as meadows and fields. "Old Meadow" is the name of the central piece of the meadows west of the Schwanheimer Bahnstraße. The term is misleading because the "Alte Wiese" is the youngest of the Schwanheim meadows today. It faded during the Thirty Years War, was finally wooded and was not cleared until the 19th century.
