In 1872-74 more than 300 men dug the canal from Søborg to Gilleleje. The work was done by hand and with working days of fourteen hours.
The canal was part of the great work, the drainage of Lake Søborg, which took place in 1872-76. The site's owner, Count Frijs von Frijsenborg, wanted to convert the area into fertile farmland after a similar project had failed satisfactorily a few hundred years previously.
By the spring of 1874 the canal was complete - the men had dug 3.9 kilometers and built six bridges across the canal.

Interesting story about a somewhat inconspicuous channel. Apparently the Søborg Sø was drained via this canal in the Middle Ages.
