The church in Gilleleje dates from 1538. Originally, the church was a half-timbered building built from old ship planks. With the restoration in the 18th century, the framework was removed and replaced by stone walls.
During the occupation of the occupying power against the Danish Jews in October 1943, about 80 people had hidden on the floor of the church and waited for the possibility to come to Sweden with a fishing boat. The hiding place was betrayed and all were arrested on the night of 7 October and they were then deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. In total, 470 Jewish citizens were deported. Of them 53 start, while the others could back to Denmark.
In Gilleleje there are also 7 memorial stones created by the sculptor Gerda Thune Andersen. You are in the following locations: Gilleleje Kirke, Gilleleje Hovedgade 45, Strandbakkerne east of the harbor, Gilleleje Station, Stationsvej 10, "Manufakturhandleren" på Østergade, Gemeindehaus Gilleleje Hovedgade 55 and Staldloftet on Østergade 5 and the port of Gilleleje.
