Gammel Færgestrlde is one of Helsingør's medieval connecting roads from the main road (Stengade) to the beach with the ship bridges.

For many years it was in pristine condition because in the 18th century (perhaps before) it became a private backyard, gated at both ends. At that time Gammel Færgestræde was called ”The Closed Road”. It wasn't until 1911 that Helsingør Civic Association made a proposal to reopen Gammel Færgestræde to the public – also in relation to tourism – did anything happen.

In 2009, Gammel Færgestræde was excavated because some sewers needed to be repaired. It was the museum's wish that Gammel Færgestræde should have looked like in the "old days". This means that Gammel Færgestræde has got an open gutter stone in the middle again and the cobblestones are laid as so-called "knobbed pavements" as they were then.
