From the seventeenth century onwards, the (economic) importance of agriculture in Zeeland grew. The farms that were built at that time had large barns. The Zeeland barn is still a defining element in the landscape here and there.
As a result of the boom in agriculture, a new farm type was introduced in Zeeland. The houses were now built detached, i.e. separate from the barn. And the previously relatively small barns became much larger. The larger barns housed the bag room, to store the harvested grain, and the stables for the cows and horses.
