"Natz" is the pet form of the male given name Bernhard, which is widespread in Münsterland. This name has been used as a synonym for a Dülmen original since the 19th century. This is said to have been the well-known innkeeper Bernhard Ostrop, who lived in Dülmen from 1824-1850. In the 1920s and 1930s, Wilhelm Majert let numerous witty verses flow from the mouth of this now proverbial original. In 1990, an initiative group of citizens of Dülmen campaigned for the creation of a memorial for "Natz von Dülmen" and secured the financing through donations. The sculpture created by Jürgen Ebbert was erected in 1993 in a place opposite the old post office, on the side of the road that is slightly below the Ostrop'schen Gasthof. Depicted is the "Natz" greeting a newly arriving traveller. Today the Natz sculpture can be found on Königsplatz at the corner of Coesfelder Straße and Viktorstraße.

Natz = short form of Bernhard; this is what the "Kiepenkerl" (the travelling salesman) was called in Münsterland, according to Augustin Wibbelt.

"Natz von Dülmen" is a term and has become a well-known trademark for the city. He can be found as a down-to-earth and hospitable "Natz" on brochures, posters and promotional stickers. People living in Dülmen have embodied this "Natz" for over 150 years.

"Heribert Töns is now well-versed in his role as Dülmener Natz. In May he replaced his predecessor Herbert Möllers and has since been the sixth Natz on city tours, bike tours and the like. Of course, the classic clothing with a striped shirt, red scarf, cap and wooden shoes is a must. How the 61-year-old came to his unusual job and what it all entails was revealed by Töns in an interview with DÜLMENplus employee Lena Riekhoff..."
